Great grandson apologizes for Chiang Kai-shek

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A great grandson of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek has apologized for what his great grandfather did during the reign of white terror, the Apple Daily reported yesterday.

Chiang Yong-bo, a son of the late Chiang Hsiao-yung, wrote a preface for a book authored by a white terror victim at the end of last year.

"I can offer my personal apology to all those who have suffered," Chiang Yong-bo wrote in the preface to Hu Tzu-tan's book, titled "Entanglement across the Centuries."

Hsiao-yung was the third son of Chiang Ching-kuo, the eldest son of the generalissimo, who moved his Kuomintang government from Nanjing to Taipei at the end of 1949.

To consolidate his power, the generalissimo stamped out political dissension. Thousands of people were arrested and detained without charges. Many were convicted and sentenced to years in prison. Quite a number of them, all Communists or Communist sympathizers were executed.
