TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The temperature around Taiwan will remain warm today after the mercury reached a summer-like 32.1 degrees Celsius in southwestern Chiayi County yesterday.
The heat of 32.1 degrees around noon in Chiayi yesterday follows a record high of 32.4 degrees set on the afternoon of Feb. 13 this year, which was the highest for the month of February in 41 years.
There are already three days which have surpassed 31 degrees so far this month in Chiayi area, officials at the Central Weather Bureau.
But they said it is still difficult to determine if the unusually high temperature is related to the global warming phenomenon.
They said the temperature in central Taiwan districts will hover between 22 and 32 degrees for a sunny day today, compared with a range of 23 to 31 degrees in southern Taiwan.
In northern Taiwan, including the Greater Taipei area, the temperature will move between 21 and 31 degrees.
But rains are expected to appear for three days starting from Thursday to bring the temperature lower to 19-30 degrees in northern Taiwan, according to forecasters at the CWB.
