Education ministry aims for smoke-free campuses

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- With new tobacco hazard control regulations set to take effect from Jan. 11, the Ministry of Education (MOE) urged schools at all levels to do their best to make their campuses fully smoke free.

The MOE made the call in a press release in line with the newly amended tobacco hazard prevention act that will impose a smoking ban at all primary and junior high schools, as well as in outdoor and indoor spaces devoted to the education of children and adolescents and to their sporting activities.

Smoking will also be prohibited inside buildings that house universities and colleges, and signs to this effect will be posted at the entrances of such buildings, in accordance with the new rule.

Citing the results of a study, the ministry said the number of smoking teenagers in Taiwan is growing every year and that some 90 percent of adult smokers start the practice as adolescents.
