Lawmaker Diane Lee resigns from Kuomintang

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Lawmaker Diane Lee resigned from the Kuomintang late last night.

In a statement, Lee said she left the ruling party lest it should be involved in her dual nationality.

Though Edward A. Betancourt of the U.S. Department of State wrote her on Dec. 4 an investigation has yet to be completed into her American citizenship, Lee said, she considered it advisable to resign from the ruling party so as not to cause it any more difficulty.

“I decided to resign, and my resignation is effective immediately,” Lee pointed out.

Lee has been under fire for keeping her U.S. citizenship, which she claims she has already given up. She insists that her taking an oath of allegiance to the Republic of China is an act of renouncing her dual citizenship.

If she is found to have kept her American citizenship, she will have to be fired as legislator and repay all the pay and remuneration she has received since 1995.
