Taiwan's administrative districts to be redrawn

Taipei, Taiwan -- The government has worked out a plan to re-demarcate Taiwan's administrative districts, under which the existing two municipal cities and 23 local counties and cities will be re-demarcated into three metropolitan areas and 15 counties.

President Ma Ying-jeou was briefed Friday on the plan by Premier Liu Chao-shiuan and ministers of the interior, finance, and transportation and communications, as well as chairman of the Council for Economic Planning and Development (CEPD) and chairman of the Research, Development and Evaluation Commission. Secretary General Wu Den-yi and executive officer of the Central Policy Committee of the ruling Kuomintang were also invited to hear the briefing.

After the briefing, President Ma instructed the Ministry of the Interior and the CEPD to iron out details of the plan for a new round of briefing within one month.

Ma said if Taiwan is to upgrade its international competitiveness, it's imperative for the government to implement the administrative district demarcation plan.

He continued that the government should take economic and transportation factors into consideration, pay attention to public opinions, carry out the plan step by step, and keep the plan going smoothly.

Under the plan, Taipei City, Taipei County and Keelung City is slated to be merged into the Taipei Metropolitan Area in 2014, Taichung City and Taichung County will be combined into the Taichung Metropolitan Area in 2010, and Kaohsiung City and Kaoshiung County will be integrated into the Kaohsiung Metropolitan Area probably in 2011.

They include, from the north to south, Taoyuan County, Hsinchu County (a merger of the existing Hsinchu County and Hsinchu City), Miaoli County, Changhua County, Nantou County, Yunlin County, Chiayi County (a merger between Chiayi City and Chiayi County), Tainan County (a combination of Tainan County and Tainan City), Pintung County, Yilan County, Hualien County, Taitung County, Penghu County, Kinmen County and Lien Chiang County.
