Chen’s defense lawyer to be probed

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Cheng Wen-lung, defense lawyer for former President Chen Shui-bian, will be investigated for a breach of the code of conduct for attorneys at law, the Ministry of Justice said yesterday.

In a statement, the justice ministry said Taipei district prosecutors and the Bar Association of the Republic of China have been asked to look into the possible breach and take action. Chen was arrested on charges of forgery, corruption and money laundering Nov. 12 and has since been held incommunicado at the Taipei detention house at Tucheng.

His lawyer, the only person allowed to meet and talk with the ex-president under detention, told the press after each visit of his client’s life, opinions and complaints. In particular, Cheng relayed the former president’s protest that he is being politically persecuted.

The defense lawyer should act as a “mouthpiece” for the detainee, the statement said. Cheng has agitated Chen’s supporters by playing the role as his spokesman, it added.
