Chen was arrested on charges of forgery, corruption and money laundering Nov. 12 and has since been held incommunicado at the Taipei detention house at Tucheng. His lawyer, the only person allowed to meet and talk with the ex-president under detention, told the press after each visit of his client’s life, opinions and complaints. In particular, Cheng relayed the former president’s protest that he is being politically persecuted. The defense lawyer should act as a “mouthpiece” for the detainee, the statement said.
