Ex-chief of president’s secretariat out on bail

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Lin Teh-hsun, former chief of the secretariat at the Office of the President, was released from the Taipei detention house yesterday.

Prosecutors of the Special Counsel ended Lin’s detention on grounds that there is no more fear of collaboration with other suspects in the state affairs fund misuse case.

The bail was set at NT$200,000.

Lin was arrested Oct. 3 on charges of forgery and corruption in connection with President Chen’s misuse of his state affairs fund.

Former first lady Wu Shu-chen is standing trial for corruption. She was indicted in November 2006, charged with borrowing invoices and receipts from friends and relatives to claim a NT$14.8 million reimbursement from the state affairs fund.

Her husband was not indicted together with her, for he was immune to prosecution, but was regarded as an unindicted co-defendant who would be formally charged on leaving office. Special Counsel prosecutors charged Lin with failure to oversee the use of President Chen’s state affairs fund.
