Ex-President Chen drinks tonic while in detention

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Former President Chen Shui-bian drank a tonic yesterday, a Taipei detention house warden said.

Chen was on Day 12 of his hunger strike at the detention house at Tucheng, some 20 miles south of Taipei.

“We gave the former president a physical,” said Lee Ta-zhu, deputy governor of the detention house, where Chen has been confined since November 12 when he was arrested on charges of forgery, corruption and money laundering.

Nothing was wrong with the ex-president, Lee said.

“He was advised to take some food by doctors who examined him,” Lee went on. Chen was then left with a cup of diluted tonic.

After he drank some out of the cup, Lee said, the former president’s blood sugar level went up a little. But he refused to take food.

Doctors from the Taipei county hospital also warned Chen of adverse effect on his kidney, if he continues to fast. “He refused to listen,” Lee added.

While on his self-imposed fasting, Chen was taken out of the detention for hospital treatment for four days.

Altogether 30 supporters cheered Chen outside of the detention house in the afternoon. They encouraged him to continue the hunger strike to showcase his innocence and what he calls the political persecution against him.

Please have some mercy on A-bian by not informing the public that he has been drinking tonic because he will shy away from drinking in the future, although we all know he is not shy to send funds abroad.

He said "yum, that's good tonic, but it burns my throat!"
