Updated Sunday, May 25, 2008 0:00 am TWN, CNA Intermarriages on declineThe figures showed that a total of 50,516 couples tied the knot between January and April, an increase of 2,054 couples year-on-year. Of these marriages, 7,239 involved non-Taiwanese spouses, a decrease of 970 year-on-year. The numbers mean that one in every seven marriages involved a non-Taiwanese spouse during the January-April 2008 period, an obvious decline compared with 2003 when one in every 3.1 couples included a foreign spouse. In terms of nationality, 4,033 of the non-Taiwanese spouses were Chinese (including Hong Kong and Macau citizens), down 18.2 percent year-on-year, and spouses from Southeast Asian countries totaled 1,901, down 10.7 percent year-on-year. Meanwhile, the figures showed that there were 17,657 divorces during the first four months of this year, of which 3,492, or 19.8 percent, involved non-Taiwanese spouses. While 1,917 of the divorces among intermarried couples involved a Chinese spouse, 1,148 involved a spouse from Southeast Asian countries. Subscribe to The China Post and save 25%.
