More Nestle, Klim products found to contain melamine

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Health officials in Taipei have examined 39 Nestle and Klim milk powder products and found that 16 of them contained tiny amounts of melamine — a harmful industrial chemical that has caused a global food safety scare — the Taipei city government’s department of health announced yesterday.

Nestle, which also produces Klim milk power, is one of the leading brands of infant and adult milk products in Taiwan.

Chiang Yu-mei, head of the department, said the 16 products were found to contain 0.123 parts per million (ppm) to 2.02 ppm of melamine, and that these products must be removed from the city’s store shelves.

According to Chiang, the 16 products included the six certified by the Department of Health on Oct. 2 as containing small amounts of melamine. Among the six products that had already been removed from Taiwan’s store shelves were Klim Instant Full Cream Milk Powder and the Neslac Growing Up series, produced in China’s Heilongjiang province.

The other 10 products included two Klim Superkid milk powder brands — respectively for children who are 3 to 5 years old and children who are 6 or older — two types of Klim milk powder for people aged 50 or over, Nestle Neslac Gold 1+ Growing Up Milk Powder, Neslac Gold 3+ Growing Up Milk Powder, and two products in the Nespray series.

All these milk powder products were produced by Shuangcheng Nestle Co. in Heilonjiang province.

Taiwan has adopted a zero tolerance standard for melamine content in food products, although its newly imported test equipment can only detect melamine levels as low as 0.05 ppm.

Nestle milk products were previously declared as safe because the equipment employed to test them was less sensitive.
