Typhoon Nuri approaching Taiwan

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) issued Tuesday morning a sea warning for Typhoon Nuri, which was upgraded from a tropical storm the same morning, weathermen said.

The bureau is likely to issue a land warning today as Nuri is approaching waters south of Taiwan.

At 2:00 p.m, Nuri was centered 660 km southeast of Eluanpi, Taiwan's southern-most tip, packing maximum sustained winds of 137 kph and moving west-northwesterly at 26-21 kph toward Taiwan, CWB data showed.

With a radius of 200 km, the typhoon is expected to continue to increase in intensity.

The head of the Philippines' weather bureau, Nathaniel Cruz, told AP that Nuri was on a path to slam ashore near northeastern Cagayan province, where a storm alert was raised warning fishermen to stay off the sea.

The typhoon is projected to reach a position 290 km south of Eluanpi at 11:00 a.m. today, the weathermen said, advising ships operating in the Bashi Channel to be extra cautious.

With the weather system moving at a fast forward speed and continuing to increase in intensity, the CWB will watch Nuri's movements closely to decide when to issue a land warning, they said.

The outer edges of the typhoon are expected to bring showers to the northern and eastern parts of Taiwan, while thunder showers are likely in the southern regions and in the mountainous regions in central Taiwan.
