‘Green transport’ Web site launched

TAIPEI -- The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) yesterday launched a Web site to promote “green transport” by providing online tips on how the public can be more environmentally friendly in their transportation habits.

“We hope to educate the general public about how to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions in their transportation and daily life, “ said Charles Lin, chief secretary of the MOTC’s Institute of Transportation, at a press conference.

“Green transport” refers to environmentally sustainable transportation methods such as hybrid or solar-power vehicles that use renewable energy, or traveling under human or animal power.

Lin said the Web site, at “greentransport.iot.gov.tw”, gives citizens tools for better loving the earth.

“As the world’s citizens, we have an obligation and responsibility to act now to protect the planet,” he said. Lin said using environmentally-friendly transportation such as biking, walking or taking public transport reduces carbon dioxide emissions and can help people save money — especially in a time of skyrocketing oil and fuel prices.

“Carpooling is another method of ‘green transport’, “ said Wang Mu-han, chief of the MOTC’s Transportation Operations and Management Division, referring to the shared use of one car by several commuters.

Wang noted that many western countries have long-term experience with promoting carpooling, and said Taiwan would follow suit.

“The ministry is planning, with the Taipei City government, to begin trials of a carpooling system in the Taipei metropolitan area by the end of this year,” he said.

While the details of the plan have not been finalized, Wang said “we will try our best to reduce safety concerns, and we hope that it [carpooling] will become a common way of traveling in the city for the general public.”
