Warning issued against swimming in creeks

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A warning against swimming in dangerous waters was issued yesterday by the Nationa

l Fire Agency (NFA) as 18 people had drowned in creeks or the sea islandwide since July 1.

According to NFA statistics, a total of 246 drowning accidents had been reported all over the island as of July 7, leaving 121 dead and 7 still missing, a slight increase compared to 119 dead and 5 missing in the same period of last year.

These accidents took place as the victims swam, fished, boated, worked, or committed suicide in dangerous waters.

In recent days, three more drowning casualties have highlighted the urgency for the authorities concerned to step up security measures to prevent similar tragedies.

Newly listed as dangerous waters by the NFA this year are Ta-pao Creek, Taipei County; Chin-ching Beach, Taipei County; Chu-wei Fishing Port, Taoyuan County; Chiyushu Waters, Hsinchu County; Ta-an Beach, Taichung County; Haitaoyuan Beach, Tainan County; and Pei-nan Creek, Taitung County.
