Updated Tuesday, July 8, 2008 0:00 am TWN, CNA 30kg of illegal items seized from flightsAccording to the official at the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine, the items were taken from Chinese tourists who arrived in Taiwan at airports designated to serve the cross-strait flights. The confiscated items included 10 meat products such as ham, dumplings, sausages, and hot dogs, and 12 fruits, including longan, olives, plums, bananas, peaches, and apples. Roses, garlic, and chilis were also among the seized items, the official said. More than 750 Chinese visitors from five Chinese cities — Beijing, Shanghai, Guanzhou, Nanjing and Xiamen — arrived in Taiwan from July 4-7 on board the first wave of nonstop cross Taiwan Strait charter flights under an accord signed in Beijing by Taiwan and China in mid-June. The official said the volume of confiscated items over the past four days was far lower than the amount taken from Chinese tourists who traveled to Taiwan via the first cross-strait charter flights during the Chinese Lunar New Year in 2003. The official added that in order to protect Taiwan’s environment and agriculture, the bureau will enhance its efforts to inform Chinese tourists about Taiwan’s customs regulations.
