59% of dried bean curd contaminated: CFThe study, which sampled 22 dried bean curd products from 20 traditional markets in Taipei and Taoyuan, showed 13 of them, or 59 percent, contained hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide, which is used for sterilization, preservation and bleaching is a poisonous fungicide. People can get stomach cancer if they consume it frequently, the foundation said. Chen Jen-hung, chairman of Consumers’ Foundation, said at the news conference: “Consumers can protect themselves by cutting up dried bean curd to see if the inside is extremely white or not — hydrogen peroxide has bleaching functions.” If dried bean curd does not have mold on it after being left in a refrigerator for over a week, they may contain hydrogen peroxide, Chen explained. The Consumers’ Foundation urged the government to step up monitoring of dried bean curd production to ensure safety of consumption. It also called upon manufacturers to change the production process so no hydrogen peroxide residue is left in bean curd products. | ||||||||||||||||||||
