Premier defends creation of private arms company

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Premier Chang Chun-hsiung yesterday defended the establishment of a private company to serves as a broker for Taiwan’s foreign arms procurements, amid skepticism of the real motives behind the outgoing administration’s move.

Chang said it was necessary to setup the company, Taiwan Goal, in order to “develop an independent defense industry.”

He said Taiwan Goal would serve as a platform for integrating the country’s arms procurement projects, and help improve the domestic arms industry and the economy in general.

“It is Taiwan Goal’s important mission to see how Taiwan’s arms sales, civilian arms industry, and weapons technologies can be elevated,” Chang said.

“It is a private company, but the Ministry of National Defense and related government bodies are involved,” he said.

Taiwan Goal has been registered as a private company, with the defense ministry holding a 45 percent stake.

But Defense Minister Lee Tien-yu Thursday reportedly said the military would not have control of the firm. Critics have questioned its purpose, pointing out that government watchdogs would not be in a position to monitor the company’s operations.
