Yunlin County launches reforestation program to cover 2,600 hectares

TAIPEI -- The Yunlin county government launched a reforestation program yesterday with a plan to promote the formation of 2,600 hectares of forest in the central county, which houses the Formosa Plastics Group's (FPG's) petrochemical complex.

The plan was drawn up after FPG agreed to provide the same amount of money as that put up by the county government as an incentive to encourage private landowners to plant trees, said Lu Cheng-chang, chief of the county's Department of Agriculture.

He pointed out that the petrochemical complex, located in Mailiao township, covers 2,600 hectares of land and emits 67 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) each year. As each hectare of forest can only absorb 20 tons of CO2 a year, the county would need to create forests spanning 3.38 million hectares to offset the massive pollution levels caused by the FPG plant, Lu noted.

With this in mind, the country government asked FPG to at least help the formation of 2,600 hectares of forests within 20 years, to match the area of land taken up by the petrochemical complex, Lu said.
