NT$1.4 bil. spent on unsafe drugs in Yunlin

YUNLIN, Taiwan -- With access to underground radio networks that sell drugs, people in Yunlin County spend NT$1.4 billion a year on questionable medicines and consequently face health issues, local media reported yesterday.

As a result of the problematic medication sold by underground radio stations, kidney dialysis is needed for more and more people in Yunlin, according to the statistics released by the public heath bureau of Yunlin County.

The Department of Heath (DOH) this year will amend existing laws to force any organization convicted of selling problematic drugs to put notices on television or in local newspapers to admit to their deceptive drug advertising, considering the fact that the organizations selling questionable drugs have not been bothered fines levied for their misbehavior, said Yang Chih-liang, head of the DOH.

On Feb. 27, Yang paid an inspection visit to Yunlin in regards to medication problems related to senior citizens who live by themselves. Elders living alone are the major victims of questionable medicine and thus community pharmacists are necessary in order to help solve the problem, he added.

Last year, for the first time, Yunlin employed community pharmacists to help old people who live alone to learn how to correctly use their medications. The result seemed encouraging, so the DOH will provide subsidies to continue the service, said an official of the public heath bureau of Yunlin County.

Tainan City and County and Chiayi City and County, which neighbor Yunlin, will also launch similar services in the near future.
