Updated Monday, December 7, 2009 9:35 am TWN, The China Post news staff Yunlin election loser apologizes for gunshot incidentChen Cheng-hui, 54, who was seeking reelection as mayor of Huwei Township in Yunlin, lost to challenger Lin Wen-bing, 53, by more than 2,000 ballots. After drinking an alcoholic substance, he took a modified gun to Lin's election campaign head office to complain that Lin had allegedly paid off some voters. After taking out the pistol, he was tackled by Lin's son, who is a policeman stationed in Taichung. The gun went off during the struggle and bruised the leg and foot of Lin's daughter. Chen was soon overpowered by Lin's campaign aides and was taken to a police station for questioning. Lin's daughter was slightly injured and released from hospital after treatment. Police also searched Chen's home for more arms, but found no other weapons. Chen told police that his anger grew when he was watching the vote counting process on TV at home and found that he was trailing the challenger. After taking liquor, Chen took the pistol, given to him by a friend, to Lin's office. He alleged that Chen had reneged on an agreement reached between the two on not paying off any eligible voters. Chen said he was sorry for the incident and apologized publicly to voters. Prosecutors have conducted an investigation and are expected to file charges against him for violating regulations concerning gun control and obstructing election. Meanwhile, both winners and losers in the “three-in-one” nationwide elections started traversing their respective districts to thank voters for their support.
