Four arrested for illegal hunting of weasels

YUNLIN, Taiwan -- The police in Dounan Township in Yunlin County arrested four suspects for illegally killing six wild Petaurista lenas, the white-faced weasel, using modified shotguns. The case is awaiting prosecution at the Yunlin District Prosecutors Office.

The police stated that around 5 a.m. on Oct 11, several police arrested the four suspects near Tsauling Village in Gukeng Township. The four suspects were found to be carrying three modified shotguns and other dangerous materials specifically use for killing the wild animals illegally. The four suspects are from Xinyi Township of Nantou County and have already killed six wild white-faced weasels using their possession of illegally modified shotguns.

During investigation, the suspects admitted their crime and will be prosecuted for violating the wild-animal protection laws and the regulations for gun, ammunition, and knife.

According to the law for wild animal protection, the illegal capturing or killing can face a penalty ranging from NT$60,000 up to NT$300,000.

Don't like hearing about people killing animals for no apparent reason, but surely the police ought to be more concerned about a bunch of halfwits wandering around with sawn-off shotguns? Even if they're clever enough to know which is the dangerous end, after a few beers there's probably a good chance they'll mistake granny's cat, or granny, for a white-faced weasel.
