Village chief swept away trying to operate water gate

YUNLIN, Taiwan -- Miao Jung-tang, village chief of Qinghan village, situated in Yunlin county's Kouhu township, was swept away by waters late on Sunday night after he and his wife attempted to operate a water gate in order to alleviate flooding in the village. His wife, who survived the accident, said that dark and stormy conditions prevented her from doing anything to save him.

The whole village mourned Miao's death yesterday, calling him a passionate public servant. Yunlin county Magistrate Su Chih-fen called for arrangements to be made to help the bereaved family.

Miao is survived by four children and his father.
