Mother dies from methane poisoning in Yunlin County

YUNLIN, Taiwan -- A woman passed away, and another remains in a coma after suffering from methane poisoning at a pickled cabbage factory in Yunlin County. Two other men were hospitalized and in stable condition. It is unclear what caused the incident.

The factory is a family-run business. Mother Huang Hsiu-pen collapsed while scooping up pickled cabbage inside a large barrel. Her three daughters and employee Li Feng-lieh rushed to save her, but also became unconscious during their efforts to save Huang due to methane inhalation. Huang was declared dead upon her arrival at the hospital, and her eldest daughter Chang Hui-wen remains in a Glasgow Coma Scale level 8 coma. Three others were taken to the China Medical University Beigang Hospital for treatment.

Factory owner and father Chang Chen-hui tried to keep his spirits up despite losing his wife and eldest daughter in the incident, saying he would let the doctors decide whether Chang should be transferred to another medical facility for treatment.
