Yilan government offering cash for old bikes

YILAN, Taiwan -- The Yilan County government is offering cash incentives to encourage its residents replace to their old motorbikes with bicycles.

Residents stand a chance of receiving NT$2,000 each if they abandon their old motorbikes for electrically-assisted bicycles, and NT$1,000 each for ordinary bikes, the northeastern county’s environmental authority said.

Chou Tsang-yang, head of the county’s Environmental Protection Department, said exhaust from old motorbikes are a major source of air pollution.

It is an environmental trend to go for non-polluting or low-polluting forms of transportation, such as bicycles, which do not need gasoline, he said.

But he said there are quotas for the cash incentives —- 60 openings for electrically-assisted bikes and 100 for the ordinary ones.

Interested residents have to complete the procedure of canceling the registrations of their motorbikes so as to apply for the cash subsidies.
