YUNLIN, Taiwan -- The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) confirmed yesterday the country's first indi

genous Japanese encephalitis case of this year.

The patient is a 25-year-old Yunlin County resident who is doing his military service in Kaohsiung, said CDC Deputy Director-General Chou Chih-hao.

The victim was hospitalized May 10 after coming down with a high fever, fatigue and convulsions, and was discharged June 2 after he recovered, Chou said.

Chou advised the public to avoid pig sties and places where mosquitoes multiply, such as paddy fields, to reduce the risk of contracting the mosquito-borne Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV).

Japanese encephalitis is endemic in Asia, transmissible to humans via mosquitoes that become infected by feeding on domestic pigs and wild birds infected with the virus.

The incubation period of the disease runs between five and 15 days. Mild infections usually occur without apparent symptoms other than fever with headache.
