Old lady survives one-hour drowning

YILAN, Taiwan –– A 72-year-old woman managed to survive a drowning accident in a cold ri

ver in eastern Yilan county and was recovered after over one hour on Wednesday, according to police.

Agents of the Yilan county fire department were informed of the incident at around 7:45 a.m. Wednesday, and immediately rushed to Yilan River, trying to recover the “body” of the drowned woman.

As the boat approached the accident site, the firemen saw a “floating body” lying motionless in the river, facing up.

But when they got closer, one agent saw the woman blink her eyes, and judged that she was still alive.

The firemen pulled the woman onto the raft, headed to the river bank near the Yilan Bridge, and rushed her to a nearby hospital.

Following emergency treatment, the woman gradually came to, and given intensive medical treatment.

Six firemen engaged in the rescue said it was quite incredible for an elderly woman to survive after drowning in a cold river for more than one hour.
