Taiwan Orange Festival to be inaugurated today

YUNLIN, Taiwan -- A 31-day orange festival will be inaugurated today in Yunlin County, home to a large proportion of Taiwan’s agricultural produce, Yunlin Magistrate Su Chih-fen announced yesterday.

Su made the announcement at a news conference at the Council of Agriculture (COA) in Taipei that was also attended by COA Chairman Su Jia-chyuan.

Su Jia-chyuan noted that most of Taiwan’s oranges are produced in the southern Yunlin and Chiayi area, but added that prices are low due to the large quantity harvested.

“The COA has been pondering how to increase the profits of orange growers in this area,” Su Jia-chyuan said, adding that this year’s orange festival will offer a variety of interesting activities, emulating France’s Orange Festival, to attract both buyers and tourists.

In addition, Yunlin County is well known for its coffee, seafood and puppet shows, the COA head said, expressing hope that the combination of the orange festival and tourist attractions will benefit farmers in the county.
