Taoyuan City to hold earth god festival for eighth year

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taoyuan City has the largest number of temples dedicated to Tu Di Gong, the earth god in Chinese folk religion, in proportion to its population in Taiwan.

In celebration of this, the city is to hold a Tu Di Gong Festival for worshippers to pray for the safety and prosperity of the nation and its citizens.

The Tu Di Gong Festival, which is organized by the Taoyuan City Government, is now in its eighth year and will kick off Aug. 29 at the Taoyuan County Arts Park.

Taoyuan City Mayor Su Jia-min said Friday that there are currently 103 statues of Tu Di Gong in the city and that a further six statues will be brought from China to take part in the festival. The city expects that around 2,000 people will take to the streets to celebrate.

The festival will feature a series of activities, including a family carnival, seminars on religious culture, parades, and theatrical performances.

Su also said it will be the last Tu Di Gong Festival to be organized by Taoyuan City, as the city and county are to be upgraded to a special municipality later this year.
