TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A 58-year-old man, surnamed Ho, who was arrested on Aug. 3 in Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport while trying to smuggle drugs into the country, died yesterday in hospital.
According to police's investigation, Ho accepted the job as drug trafficker as he owed a NT$100,000 debt to a drug dealer. Ho flew to Cambodia and swallowed 64 drug capsules there with the intent of taking them back to Taiwan in his stomach. Ho was detained by police acting on a confidential informant's information. He was sent to a hospital near the airport.
Ho expelled 57 drug capsules under the supervision of police and health care workers. However, he was physically unable to expel the rest of the drug balls and died yesterday. The officers of the drug enforcement unit doubted that his death was caused by the drugs left in his stomach. The specific cause of death will be determined during autopsy.
