Camera shows angry foreign rider harassing Taoyuan bus driver

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A foreign bus rider was exposed yesterday by fellow Taiwanese passengers as having abused the driver of his bus after the driver allegedly refused to stop the vehicle when the man rang his stop bell after the bus had reportedly passed his intended station.

In an incident caught on camera, a foreigner and his pregnant girlfriend took a Taoyuan bus and rang the stop bell as they missed their stop on the evening of Aug. 4. When the bus pulled into the following station, the foreigner started to declare the bus driver Chen Chin-chi's (陳金積) mistake of ignoring the bell and loudly demanded an apology.

The video also recorded Chen explaining bus safety regulations to the passenger, stating that it is unsafe to stop the bus after a station has been passed, and that passengers should request a stop before an intended station. The driver's explanation further angered the foreigner, who was shown shouting louder with vulgar English-language words as well as stepping closer to Chen while expressing physical and verbal provocations, at one point stepping into the driver's seat.

During the conflict, Chen was seen calm and poised, while the foreigner's girlfriend urged the driver to provide an apology. The conflict came to a close when an elderly passenger stepped in between the two to defuse the tension.

The incident was recorded by a local passenger, surnamed Lin, who posted the video on YouTube.

The foreigner allegedly released a statement yesterday that emphasized that all actions he had taken were to protect his pregnant girlfriend. The foreigner apologized in his statement for causing fear and anxiety, and he stated that he couldn't bear Lin's irresponsibility in uploading the video while calling for an Internet manhunt. Lin's video also did not depict the incident in full, which encouraged viewers to take the incident out of context, the statement declared.

What was Jason protecting his pregnant girlfriend from?

The only danger on that bus was Jason. I hope he's arrested and charged. He owes an apology to the driver, the passengers, other foreigners in Taiwan and Taiwan....the language he used and his behavior was beyond disgusting.

He says, "Lin's video also did not depict the incident in full"... that wouldn't justify anyone behaving in that way.

Check out the Youtube video (the news didn't show it all...it's much worse when you hear everything he said):

Foreigner? You guys do understand that the individual is half-Taiwanese right?

That foreigner should go back to whatever country he came from and act out his rudeness over there.

So basically two wrongs don't make a right. Bus driver didn't stop, angry passenger went into a verbal fit. The only news here is because the passenger isn't Chinese and the media wants to encourage the xenophobia/racism of the 'locals'.

As a foreigner it is a privilege to live in Taiwan not a right. Such conduct should be viewed as offensive and the privilege to stay be revolved. Then such incidences would not happen. As a foreigner, I always present a positive image of an American.

There is no excuse for his behaviour. To over-react in such a way to a minor inconvenience is really despicable. From his language, he sounds like a young punk and correspondingly acts like one. I really dislike the younger generations, "In Your Face" attitude and culture. In the end, this will only make life more difficult for foreigners living here in Taiwan. I would like clarification if he is half-Taiwanese (混血)or American Born Chinese/Taiwanese (華僑)。 Please excuse my language if 混血 (mixed-blood) seems racist. I am a foreigner whose only has a command of survival Chinese. Anyway, this knowledge might diffuse the possible increased xenophobia.

Such behavior is totally uncalled for. He bears a deep sense of discrimination by ranting non-stop while knowing that the driver probably did not understand him. Many people have bad temper, but that's not a reason to hurl abuse at someone offering you a service, but an excuse. Get a grip, young man. And to his wife, what a good example for your unborn child.

I just want to say to all viewers of the video that the man is an American and not English or British or other European as is often the mistake locals will make when the see the "wei guo ren". He should be deported from the country so he should not be aloud to harass innocent bus drivers like that. A shameful exhibition of brutish bullying.

This guy is ABC, American born Chinese (Taiwanese). So although his ancestors lived in Taiwan just like Jeremy Lin but because he is a bad boy, he is disowned and called a foreigner and let all the racism/xenophobia begin. I have seen his picture and he doesn't look mixed race but I could be mistaken as other mixed race people show no apparent signs either like Bob Marley (white/black).

Ancestry has nothing to do with his upbringing. If a German shepherd dog is brought among wolves then he is a wolf.
If you live with pigs you become one of them...!!!

Mixed race or ancestry is not the issue here. He was raised in a country where most things are settled with a gun or fists. If a puppy dog is raised with wolves he becomes a wolf....
