Township rep. gets 5 months for slapping nurse

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Kuomintang Luchu Township Representative Wang Kui-fen (王貴芬) yesterday was sentenced to five months in prison by the Taoyuan District Court for slapping a nurse in the face in public.

The court ruled that Wang's five-month imprisonment can be commuted to a fine at a daily rate of NT$2,000, and the ruling is appealable.

Wang was indicted by prosecutors last December on allegations of publicly humiliating and physically harming the nurse, surnamed Li.

The incident happened last November when Wang made a phone call to the hospital where her father was hospitalized to ask about his condition. Wang was not pleased with the attitude of Li, who answered the phone, and then went to the hospital to find Li, dragged her out from an Intensive Care Unit, and allegedly slapped her in the face twice in front of other medical staff in the hospital.

After local media reported the incident, Wang first claimed she barely "touched" Li's surgical mask, and later, after being questioned by prosecutors, said that she had not eaten for two days and that was why she lost control.

In light of the incident, the Legislative Yuan on the last day of the previous session passed an amendment to the Medical Care Act, which stipulates that should anyone violently obstruct or threaten medical personnel's operations, he or she would face a maximum punishment of three years' imprisonment.

Once again money talks in Taiwan. A fine of $ 180,000 NT is nothing for rich imbedded politicians. She should be required to serve at least 1/4 of the time in Jail.
