Man proposes marriage at 'kiss & hug' contest

The China Post news staff--One enthusiastic participant at a “kiss and hug” contest puffed up the courage and pulled out the stops yesterday, to propose to his girlfriend of nine years.

A shopping center held the “Real Love Kiss and Hug Challenge” yesterday, as part of its annual Valentines Day programming.

Some 400 Facebook users voted for seven couples to kiss and hug in public for 214 seconds. Six of the seven couples stepped up to meet the challenge in Taoyuan County yesterday afternoon.

Onlookers got more than they bargained for, when a Hsinchu native got down on one knee onstage.

The man, surnamed Kung, produced a ring and proposed to his girlfriend of nine years. The woman, surnamed Lee (李), was visibly delighted and said yes on the spot.

All six couples completed the 214-second challenge and were eligible to draw straws for prizes.

Kung and Lee did not pick up the top prize, a pair of watches valued at NT$25,000.

But he did “get the girl,” said Kung. “That's the best Valentine's Day gift.”
