Taipower ordered to pay woman compensation over cable accident

The Taiwan High Court has ordered the Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) give NT$270,000 in damages to a woman who was injured in a traffic accident caused by a loose cable belonging to the company, a report said yesterday.

The woman, 40, was driving her scooter in Tayuan, Taoyuan County on the evening of Feb. 18, 2008 when she tripped over a loose Taipower cable, according to the court verdict cited by the Central News Agency.

The woman, surnamed Huang, fell off and sustained injuries that included broken ribs.

Huang sued the company, holding it responsible for failing to maintain its facilities.

The Taoyuan district court ruled in favor of Huang and awarded her NT$420,000 in damages.

The high court, returning a final verdict, argued that the motorcyclist should also be held partially responsible for the accident for not driving as carefully as she should have, and it therefore reduced the damages.
