HTC engineer detained for exposing phone pre-launch

TAOYUAN, Taiwan -- Taoyuan District Court fined an engineer who participated in the development of HTC Dream and ordered him to a 60-day detention for offenses against privacy, local media reported.

The engineer surnamed Kuo was responsible for research and development of the Internet-enabled smartphone, but exposed its pictures prior to its official launch, according to local media.

Kuo e-mailed pictures of the phone to Chang, owner of a popular consumer electronic Web site, in 2008.

He also took the phone out of the company and allowed it to be photographed, the court said.

HTC personnel called the police after discovering the pictures online, said local media. The case is open to appeal.
