Election of PFP lawmaker annulled in first trial

TAOYUAN, Taiwan -- Taoyuan District Court declared another legislative election invalid yesterday for alleged presenting of gifts to constituents by the elected during his campaigning period.

The election of People First Party (PFP) Legislator Lin Cheng-er to represent plain indigenous peoples in the Legislative Yuan was annulled by the Taoyuan District Court at the end of the case's first trial. Lin expressed that he respected the ruling but will file an appeal yesterday evening.

Lin violated election laws by hosting meal parties for indigenous constituents and giving jackets to some of the invited voters in 2007, said Hsu Pei-yuan, district court spokesman.

The jackets were violations of the election law because they were given with the understanding of reciprocation, Hsu added.

Responding to the charges, Lin said that he did not host meal parties for constituents but his campaign workers.

Earlier in June, Lin was also sentenced to two years in prison with possible suspension of three years for criminal charges related to vote-buying. That case is pending appeal at the High Court.

If convicted of election law violations in the subsequent second and third trials, Lin will be removed from his legislative seat.

He is the only PFP representative in the Legislative Yuan for the current term.
