Taoyuan Airport MRT line expected by 2014

TAOYUAN, Taiwan -- The mass rapid transit (MRT) line that is being built to connect Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport and metropolitan Taipei is scheduled to be completed by 2014, transportation officials said yesterday.

The new facility will offer travelers faster and more convenient transportation services, cutting the distance between Taipei City and the country’s main airport to 35-minutes, from the current average 45 minutes by bus, the officials said.

Once the MRT line goes into operation, the officials noted, there will be a 25 percent drop in the number of privately owned automobiles entering the airport and a 20 percent decline in the number of regular buses operating on the airport route.

The metro system, currently under construction, will alleviate traffic congestion between Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport and Taipei, aviation police said.

Aviation Police Office statistics show that the traffic flow toward the airport averages 30,000 vehicles a day. Road traffic around the terminals is usually jammed during the peak flight periods at the airport, the police said.
