Outdoors competitions to start mid-December

Sponsored by the Forestry Bureau under the Council of Agriculture (COA), the events span four months and are open to all athletes and nature-lovers. Activities on the Great Snow Mountain will take place on the afternoon of Dec. 18; the Taoyuan East Eye Mountain on Jan. 15; Chihpen on Feb. 19 and Kenting on March 19.

Prospective participants can call 0939-315914 to apply. The first 100 applicants will receive a headband valued at NT$500. Competition winners will also be awarded with special prizes while raffles with up to NT$4,000 in gifts.

Those who creatively document their travels are also in luck; the bureau is holding a competition for the best picture taken in the nation's Forest Recreation Areas, requiring that the photographers accompany the photo with an apposite quote. The most creative may receive up to NT$20,000 as a reward. The bureau will accept contest photographs until Feb. 18. For more information, visit: http://www.forest-spa.com.tw/.
