Tainted official likely to be nominated for office

TAITUNG, Taiwan -- A Taitung County magistrate will likely become the ruling Kuomintang's (KMT) candidate for the by-election to select a legislator to represent the county, after a KMT poll yesterday showed that support for the magistrate is over the nomination threshold.

With 32.57 percent of the people surveyed expressing support for Taitung Magistrate Kuang Li-jen's bid for a vacant legislative seat, the local KMT chapter is expected to put Kuang forward for official nomination by the party.

Although Kuang was the only candidate in the party's primary, the KMT's Taitung chapter followed standard procedure and fielded a telephone poll to gauge public opinion of Kuang.

According to KMT, any candidate would require at least 30 percent support from the telephone survey to garner the party's nomination.

If nominated, Kuang will compete against former Taitung City Mayor Lai Kun-cheng from the opposition Democratic Progressive Party. The seat was vacated by KMT Legislator Huang Jian-ting in his run for the next Taitung magistrate. The by-election will take place on Jan. 9, 2010.

The survey was conducted over Nov. 7 and 8 by two private entities with 1,068 effective respondents.
