Antique vase smashed in bid to get rid of evidence

TAITUNG, Taiwan -- Taitung County police recently recovered a stolen antique vase worth millions of NT dollars, only to return it to the owner in pieces, local media reported yesterday.

According to officers, one of the suspected thieves, unnerved after police interrogation, smashed the vase afterward so as to get rid of evidence, said a TVBS report.

The antique vase that dates back to the Ming Dynasty was reported stolen three years ago by its owner, surnamed Huang, who had purchased it for NT$2.3 million from the Philippines in 1986, the report noted.

Huang found the vase, along with a Qing Dynasty wine vessel and a tiger-skin rug, missing after a group of friends visited his residence, the report said.

The lid of the vessel was damaged as well, and the rug was discarded; its whereabouts unknown, police explained.
