Kuang to humbly face criticism after returning to Taiwan today

TAITUNG, Taiwan -- Taitung County Magistrate Kuang Li-jen said yesterday that she would humbly face criticisms on her controversial failure to head the typhoon-fighting operations of the county, and make complete explanations on the matter, after returning to Taiwan this afternoon.

Kuang, who is visiting Europe as leader of a delegation of 10 township chiefs, made the remarks when answering questions from a Central News Agency reporter in Berlin.

Kuang told the reporter that the delegation has made quite a few inspection tours in European countries. For instance, the group visited Preiburg, which is globally renowned for its solar energy applications, and got a deeper understanding of the operations of the Solar Energy Research Center, solar energy power generating plants and solar energy communities in the southwestern city of Germany.

The magistrate also stressed that after 12 days of inspection tours, the delegation has significantly boosted the international visibility of Taitung County and has absorbed many experiences in how to carry out rural construction.

Kuang’s delegation left on July 23 for Europe, visiting Italy, Switzerland and Germany. She came under fire from various sectors for failing to return to Taitung to command the anti-typhoon operations when Typhoon Fung-Wong hit Taiwan on July 27.

Kuang is scheduled to return to Taoyuan International Airport early this morning, and then she will fly back to Taitung’s Feng Nien Airport at 2:00 p.m. by taking a domestic flight from Songshan Airport.

The magistrate will hold a press conference at 3:00 p.m. at the Taitung county government.
