that the party has revoked the KMT membership of Hsu Chih-hsiung, who is running for a legislative seat as an independent in the Jan. 12 election against a KMT-nominated candidate. Yang Yuan-hsun, head of the KMT's Taitung County Office, said his office was merely revoking Hsu's membership, instead of expelling him from the KMT, because Hsu already renounced his KMT membership when he declared his candidacy Nov. 17.
Hsu, 53, a former Taitung County councilor, is running against KMT nominee Justin Huang, an incumbent legislator who is seeking re-election for a third term.
Although Hsu is seen clearly as an underdog, he has managed to get the support of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which has not fielded its own candidate in the election. He has pledged that he will maintain good relations with the DPP government if elected.
