Taipei City Government holds new immigrant multicultural exhibition

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taipei City Government collaborating with the central government, local governments and civil associations yesterday held an exhibition of the cultures of new immigrants to celebrate their integration into local communities.

Taipei City Government has been working hard to provide counseling service for new immigrants for 14 years, Department of Civil Affairs of the Taipei City Government (台北市民政局) said. The exhibition not only introduced the service to the public, but also offered an opportunity for immigrant families and local communities to communicate with each other.

Neighborhood chiefs in Taipei had distributed tens of thousands of gift bags to immigrant families, Director General of Department of Civil Affairs Huang Lu Chin-ju (黃呂錦茹) said.

Fourteen new immigrant families from 6 countries competed in a cooking contest as part of the exhibition. Vietnamese immigrant Chiao-chen used Taiwanese ingredients to create Taiwanese-Vietnamese cuisines. Neighborhood chiefs and local residents also participated in games yesterday.

The event drew over 100 ward chiefs from Taipei and 5,000 new immigrants and residents, said Huang Lu Ching-Ju, head of the city's Department of Civil Affairs

There are 46,563 new immigrants in Taipei city, including 33,802 spouses from China and 12,761 spouses from other countries; besides, diverse courses are held annually in order to help immigrants to integrate into local communities.

In Singapore and Hong Kong immigrants are from Europe and North America well as in Taiwan immigrants are from Vietnam and China and other south east Asian countries....So when children from Singapore and Hong Kong are learning American English, British English and other European language.... Taiwanese are already losing in international competitiveness to other competitors in Asia and it will get doubt about Taiwanese people with money and power are sending children abroad as they know what future lies for Taiwanese when they are learning and interacting south east Asian language rather than American English, British English and important European language as Taiwanese already have Mandarin Chinese as national language which is second most important language in the face if earth.
