Taipei Computer Applications Show sees record attendance

TAIPEI -- The Taipei Computer Applications Show, one of the major consumer electronics exhibitions in Taiwan, ended Monday after attracting a record number of visitors, the organizers said.

The five-day event drew over 600,000 visitors, and sales were up 33.27 percent compared with last year, the Taipei Computer Association (TCA) said in a statement.

About 200 electronics suppliers showcased their devices at the event, including Taiwan-based personal computer vendors Acer Inc. and Asustek Computer Inc., smartphone brand HTC Corp., and telecom operators Chunghwa Telecom Co., Far EasTone Telecommunications Co, Taiwan Telecom Co. and Taiwan Star Cellular Corp.

Foreign exhibitors included Chinese PC vendor Lenovo Group Ltd., U.S.-based PC brands Hewlett-Packard Co. and Dell Corp., Japanese electronics giants Toshiba Corp. and Canon Corp, and South Korea's LG Corp., according to the TCA.

Laptop computers were the most popular items bought by visitors during the show, accounting for 54 percent of all sales by revenue, followed by digital cameras at 14 percent, smartphones at 9 percent, tablets at 6 percent, the TCA said.

Acer's sales were "better than expected," the association said. Its tablet sales grew 10 times from a year earlier, with the 5,000 Iconia A1-840 available at the show selling out.

Asustek, meanwhile, saw 30 percent annual growth in its sales during the show, the TCA said. The company was quoted as saying by the TCA that it sold one of its low-cost ZenFone smartphones every minute.
