TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Kuomintang (KMT) Taipei mayoral candidate Sean Lien (連勝文) yesterday proposed to better develop Twatiutia's unique characteristics in Western Taipei and turn it into an area that combines traditional and modern values.
Lien said that the revival and establishment of the western area of Taipei City will be on the top of his to-do list in the future; and Twatiutia, a crucial historic section in Datong District, will be the center of this project.
“Twatiutia is an area that has unique and meaningful history and culture,” said Lien. “If the area can be properly designed along with modernized marketing plans, it will be transformed into a tourist hot spot that has its own characteristics.”
According to Lien, the Daikanyama in Japan and the Soho District in the U.S. both have their own distinctiveness, which is passed down through history and through local traditional shops. Those areas have become unique spots that attract millions of tourists each year.
“Those two places can be the references for Twatiutia's future development plan,” said Lien.
The spokeswoman of Lien's camp, Chin Hui-yuan (秦蕙媛), also posted on her Facebook page that Lien has communicated with many Twatiutia locals about the development of Twatiutia and Dihua Street commercial loop.
According to Chin, Lien and many locals agreed that if Twatiutia, Dihua Street commercial loop and Ximending can be effectively connected, it will help bring more people to the western area of the city and boost the local economy.
Lien also said that since the Twatiutia pier is finished, the area has the potential to develop through a system of waterways or elevated walkways that can prevent traffic jams on the roads.
Lien said that this project will require cooperation between the government and civil organizations that will greatly benefit the industries and people in the western part of Taipei City.
