Tourism initiative enjoys success

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Over 20,000 Golden Fulong Route Tour Packages were purchased by tourists from mainland China that would create at least NT$300 million profits from tourism, the Tourism Bureau said yesterday.

The Tourism Bureau has been promoting the Golden Fulong Route Tour Packages, the third most popular travel package launched by the bureau, to tourists from mainland China for the first time and over 20,000 packages were sold in two months.

According to the Tourism Bureau, nearly 20,000 tourists from mainland China are expected to visit Taiwan soon thanks to the Golden Fulong Route Tour Package, which will lead to at least NT$300 million in revenue from tourism.

Liu Hsi-lin (劉喜臨), deputy director-general of the Tourism Bureau, said that the number of international backpackers visiting Taiwan has been growing in recent years, so the bureau is set to promote the travel packages this year.

Liu said that the bureau chose the NT$299 Golden Fulong Route Tour Package among all 34 travel packages in Taiwan, because it includes a one-day bus pass, a round-trip train ticket between Taipei and Fulong, vouchers for bicycle rental and also coupons for a boxed meal from Fulong train station.

"The Tourism Bureau will continue to promote other popular travel packages for tourists from China, including the 88 Anping Route package, Lukang Route package and Xitou Route package in order to expand the number of routes that tourists can visit," said Liu.

According to Liu, the number of Chinese tourists who visited Taiwan in April of this year increased by 26 percent compared to that number last year.

"Thanks to the Tourism Bureau's travel promotions, the number of Chinese tourists who will visit Taiwan individually is expected to grow continuously this year," said Lin.

According to the Tourism Bureau, the government is setting a goal of welcoming nine million tourists to Taiwan this year, and the bureau proposed to increase the number of mainland Chinese tourists from 3,000 to 4,000 daily.

The Tourism Bureau said that Southeast Asia is the main target for the bureau, with the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia and mainland China in the top three in terms of the greatest growth in the number of tourists visiting Taiwan this year.
