YouBike will undergo 2 software updates to enhance convenience

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Taipei City Government Department of Transportation (DOT, 臺北市政府交通局) has announced a temporary suspension of operations on all YouBike kiosks and stations between 1 and 5 a.m. on Tuesday, April 8.

To improve the convenience of the public bike program for the general public as well as tourists traveling around Taipei City, all YouBike stations around Taipei will be offline early Tuesday morning as the kiosks undergo two software updates. Bike rentals will not be available, with stations only active for bike returns.

In order to make EasyCard activation faster for residents who have yet to register for the YouBike service, the first software update will speed up the process by replacing the manual EasyCard number sign up with an automatic card recognition.

Currently YouBike services accept foreign tourists with Smart Chip credit cards. However, surveys have shown that traditional credit cards are still used more commonly than the Smart Chip based technology. The second software update seeks to enable YouBike rentals for foreigners using traditional cards.

YouBikes have also played an important part in the recent political demonstrations. Since the activists' occupation of the Legislative Yuan, authorities have secured the surrounding perimeter with fortified traffic control, but despite the NTU Hospital and the National Central Library YouBike Stations having been shut down, citizens have been renting the vehicles from afar to park at the stations nearest to the protest sites.

Should the stations become unavailable for returns, the large station at Taipei Main Station exit Y-17 has since became the popular go-to place for teens to return and hang out. All three stations have recorded high amounts of use during the two weeks of the Sunflower Movement.
