2 MRT stations to implement bike-towing policy

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Taipei City Parking Management and Development Office (臺北市停車管理工程處) introduced a new policy yesterday, enforced in areas around MRT Daan and Dongmen stations.

In a press release issued the same day, the office explained that as a result of the opening of the MRT's Xinyi line, an increase in crowds around Daan and Dongmen station has resulted in more shoppers commuting to those stations on bicycles.

Illegal bicycle parking on the streets and pedestrian walkways has made walking and parking around the area difficult for residents.

Following official complaints, the parking office initially planned an expansion of bicycle parking areas around the two stations at the beginning of March, increasing the parking spaces at Dongmen Station to 231 units and Daan Station to 356 units. Authorities also issued written advisory tickets to improperly-parked bicycles.

After seeing little improvement, the parking office officially launched a bicycle towing program yesterday, removing up to 20 bicycles from both stations to the Long Men Junior High School Underground Parking Lot by the end of the day.

The office has stated that the program will continue, and advised any bicyclists who commutes to the areas to park their bicycles in designated parking spaces. Any towed bicycles will be recycled if not reclaimed within 4 months.
