Second case of German measles confirmed: CDC

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan's Centers for Disease Control (CDC) confirmed on Tuesday a Chinese male student as the second German measles case in Taiwan this year.

The 25-year-old exchange student, who is now being confined to his dormitory, developed rashes on Feb. 28 while visiting Taipingshan and a night market in Luotung in Yilan County during the holiday commemorating the 228 Incident, a CDC official said.

The student was confirmed as having German measles, also known as rubella, on Monday, and the CDC urged anybody who visited the Yilan market during the same period to monitor their health for symptoms until March 23.

Health authorities have also compiled a list of 177 contacts, including the student's contacts at school, travel companions, hotel and restaurant workers and hospital workers and advised them to monitor their health as well.

As of Tuesday morning, none of the contacts had developed any rubella-related symptoms.
