TSU accuses New Taipei mayor of illegal manipulation of contracts

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Several Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU) legislators held a press conference yesterday to accuse New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu (朱立倫) of involvement in illegal acts involving contracts entered into by the New Taipei City Government.

The TSU legislators said they suspect that Chu violated the "Public Officer Conflict of Interest Avoidance Act" after Fiber Logic Communication Inc. (威創科技公司), the company in which the family of Chu's father-in-law invested, won several government bids over the past 13 years for a total monetary value of over NT$ 1.1 billion.

Chu said he felt he had nothing to say regarding the suspicion, pointing out that Taiwan is a society ruled by the law and, therefore, everything should follow the law.

"If I am involved in any illegal issue, help yourself to report me to the Ministry of Justice and the Control Yuan," said Chu.

When asked by media if recent negative accusations toward him were related to the election, Chu responded that citizens' eyes are clear, so there will be no harm brought about by the meaningless accusation.

Chu added that it is a waste of social resources when people falsely accuse someone out of political considerations.

"What Taiwan needs is practical action, not false accusations," said Chu.

The New Taipei City Government also released a declaration to clarify the fact, saying that the company did not, in fact, win any bids from the government.
