CIB arrests 4 suspects with ties to 2 mil. yuan extortion attempt

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) recently cracked an extortion case in which four suspects threatened to disclose the information of a technology company's clients if the company failed to pay them 2 million yuan.

The CIB received report of the case in November last year and was told that several unidentified individuals had been threatening to release the above-mentioned data on the Internet in an attempt to get 2 million yuan.

The CIB later found out that the data in question had already been leaked in 2011. Although the company sent out a press release to explain the incident, the suspects continued to threaten it.

The CIB put the suspects under surveillance for several months and recently mobilized 20 police officers to search their hideouts in Taipei, New Taipei City, Taoyuan County and Hsinchu City. The CIB found contraband at the scene and proceeded to arrest the four suspects. The four were later transferred to a district court.
