Health Department to deal with accusations over malformed baby

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- New Taipei City's Public Health Department yesterday announced that it will be taking actions in dealing with accusations from the parents of a baby born with only one limb today.

The couple, surnamed Hsu, accused an obstetrics and gynecology clinic in Zhonghe, New Taipei City of misreading ultrasound scans it took of their infant when Mrs. Hsu was pregnant. The parents say clinic conducted eight ultrasound scans for the couple and had informed them that their baby was perfectly healthy and “there were no abnormalities,” but the Hsu's found out that their daughter had only her left leg intact and was missing three limbs.

The couple then decided to sue the clinic for professional negligence.

According to the Public Health Department's Yen Chung-han, the department had provided the couple application papers for government interference after finding out about the incident. The department will ask the clinic to provide case reports of the infant today; two expert gynecologist-obstetricians will be conducting an investigation after looking through the information provided, said Yen.

The Public Health Department will also invite both the accused clinic and the Hsus to discuss the situation and conflicts, hoping to reduce the perceved differences and eventually reach a compromise, Yen added.
